Regressor!Cicero Headcanons

Cicero is a toddlerspace regressor, settling in at about four on most of his little days. He started regressing before he was made Keeper, not long after the destruction of the Bruma sanctuary. His regression is involuntary, and because of that he doesn't attempt to hide it. Sometimes he's four and that's all there is to it!

After the events at Cheydinhal and the subsequent abandonment of that sanctuary, he refuses to have any carer. Sure, the Dark Brotherhood is big on the whole found family dynamic and most wouldn't judge him for it, but the fact of the matter is that he can't trust anyone else anymore—he was on his own for eight years and took care of himself just fine, thank you. Whenever any of the members of the Falkreath sanctuary offer, Cicero insists that the only cg he needs is the Night Mother.

That doesn't mean he doesn't have his favorites though. Cicero has quite the sweet tooth when he's small, so it's easy enough to win his favor with the gift of a sweet roll or two. Moreover, if they are giving him sweets then he reasons they must like him; he knows they all sort of just tolerate him when he's big, but it's clear a few of them have a soft spot for him when he's little. So if he does wind up needing help with something that he's too small to handle alone, he goes to one of the others that he knows will be nice to him.

It isn't uncommon to find Cicero napping in cramped, tight spaces around the sanctuary. He tries to curl himself up to be as small as possible, a ragged stuffed toy clutched to his chest and a thumb pressed to his mouth. Even if the toy and thumbsucking weren't a dead giveaway that he's having a little day, napping anywhere outside of his room is something he only does when he's feeling small. It isn't a coincidence that he does so in more communal areas either, needing their presence and idle chatter in order to settle down enough to fall asleep.

Often they hear him talking to the Night Mother while he's locked in his room and think he's just going on one of his tangents again, but 70% of the time it's because he's regressed. Cicero often narrates what he's doing or what he's playing to her despite never getting any sort of response. The habit is a holdover from his eight years of solitude in Cheydinhal; it helps him feel not as scared and alone to know she's with him.

The jester persona that he integrated into his own personality after his last contract doesn't just up and vanish when he's small. Though it is certainly more muted and he's not constantly acting so over-the-top, other habits definitely stick (such as referring to himself in third person, but even that gets turned into a smaller sounding "Cici"). Lots of quiet giggles and general mischievous behavior, like pulling little pranks on the others too. Half the time the pranks don't work as he had planned, but quite a few of them still play along for his sake.

He's very jealous of the Listener, but in the way that siblings get jealous when they think their parent isn't paying them the same amount of attention. Lots of his pranks are directed at them for that reason, but also he tends to shadow after them. Is a love/hate relationship. Hangs off of their arm (you can pry short!Cicero from my cold, dead hands), asks them if Mother has said anything about him recently. He also just asks what she's been saying in general. Cicero is a very curious four, and asks all the questions.

Maybe it's the brain rot but I've been thinking about Skyrim caregivers...

Just hear me out!!

Teldryn Sero, mercenary extraordinaire, would be an amazing caregiver! He'd always know the right thing to say, and would be very protective of you... as a mercenary, no doubt he also knows how to cook and forage, so just imagine all the varied meals he'd make that he learned across his travels... Traveling with him would be so much fun!

Cicero is another one who I feel would make a great caregiver. Even though his top priority is the Night Mother, getting to look after a vibrant, living thing would be so refreshing for him! A charge who could laugh at all of his jokes, and sing songs with him, or play! Cicero is a lot of fun, but he's very serious about looking after those under his care... not to mention you'd never have to fear any danger, since Cicero is just as good with a knife as anyone in the Dark Brotherhood.

Veezara is another good one, just think of all the tricks and tips and stories the very last Shadowscale could tell a little one... he's very calm and thoughtful, and would be a meticulously thorough caretaker, always making sure you're safe and your needs are taken care of...

Tbh the Brotherhood would all make great a great agere family, just imagine playing with Arnbjorn, who would call you his cub! Astrid would be strict, but you know she cares about you so much. Festus would make a great crotchety uncle/grandpa figure. Gabriella would teach you how to knit. Babette would make a wonderful sibby... she's definitely an age regressor.
